Mayan Abdominal Bodywork (MAB) for mental, physical, and spiritual health, is a traditional healing practice that originates from the ancient Maya Kakchiquel, Kiche and Chor'ti tribes, and is performed by a Maya Ajq'ij (a Maya spiritual guide or Time keeper) and can also be performed by a certified and trained individual in the Mayan cosmology, astrology and anthology.

This unique form of physical and energetic bodywork focuses on the abdomen and pelvic region, aiming to restore balance and promote overall wellness.

The Maya Ajq'ij knows that the abdomen is a powerful center of energy and vitality. They know that any blockages or imbalances in this area could lead to various health issues, including digestive disorders, menstrual problems, infertility, and emotional disturbances. MAB seeks to address these imbalances and promote the flow of energy throughout the body.

The technique itself is rooted in the traditional healing practices of the Maya and has been passed down through generations. It has been adapted and combined with knowledge and medical backgrounds.

It is based on the individual’s Mayan cosmology, astrology and anthology utilizing the mathematical calculations of the sacred Mayan Calendars Cholq'Ij and Ha'ab.

During a MAB session, the practitioner uses gentle, non-invasive techniques to harmonize the abdomen, lower back, and pelvic area. The bodywork involves a combination of deep tissue manipulation, light touch, and energy work, tailored to the individual's specific needs.

The main goal of MAB is to realign the organs within the abdominal cavity, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, release muscle tension, and restore the natural flow of energy. It is believed that by doing so, the body's natural healing abilities are enhanced, and overall health and well-being are improved.

MAB is often used to address a wide range of conditions, including menstrual irregularities, painful periods, fertility issues, digestive disorders, urinary problems, and even emotional trauma stored in the abdominal area. It is also commonly used during the prenatal and postpartum periods to support the health of the reproductive organs and promote a smooth transition through the various stages of pregnancy and childbirth.

Aside from addressing specific health concerns, MAB can also be a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The gentle touch and focused attention on the abdominal area can help release emotional tension and promote a sense of deep relaxation and peace.

It's important to note that MAB should be performed by an Ajq'ij or a certified practitioner who has a thorough understanding of the technique and its applications. If you're interested in experiencing this therapy, it's recommended to seek out a qualified practitioner who can guide you through the process and ensure your safety and well-being.

MAB is a traditional healing practice that focuses on the abdomen and pelvic region to restore balance and promote overall wellness. Rooted in ancient Maya traditions, this therapy aims to realign the organs, improve circulation, and enhance the body's natural healing abilities. Whether used for addressing specific health concerns or promoting relaxation, MAB offers a unique and holistic approach to well-being.

3-day workshop Outline:

Introduction: The Sacred Path to Healing

MAB is a profound method of healing that intertwines physical care, emotional release, and spiritual alignment. In this sacred practice, the abdomen is seen as the Womb of Creation, a center of power, transformation, and connection to the cosmos.

The techniques presented in this manual honor ancient Mayan wisdom, including the use of the Cholq'ij calendar, rituals, and herbal remedies, while incorporating modern anatomical understanding. As you embark on this journey, remember to approach each session with integrity, reverence, and gratitude.

Reflection: Write down your intentions for learning this sacred practice. How do you hope to use it in your life and for others?

Module 1: Sacred Origins of Mayan Abdominal Bodywork & Ritual

The Mayan people viewed health as a harmonious balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Central to this harmony was the abdomen, a place of power and vulnerability.

Cosmic Connections

The abdomen is linked to the Ceiba tree, the sacred world tree in Mayan cosmology. Just as the Ceiba connects the heavens, earth, and underworld, the abdomen connects physical and energetic realms within the body.

Role of the Practitioner

A healer acts as a channel for divine energy, guided by intuition and ancestral wisdom. It is crucial to honor the sacredness of this role through prayer, meditation, and alignment with natural cycles.

Exercise: Spend 5 minutes meditating on the Ceiba tree. Visualize its roots grounding you, its trunk stabilizing you, and its branches connecting you to the heavens.

Module 2: Anatomy and Physiology of the Abdomen

Understanding the physical structure of the abdomen is crucial to effective practice.

Key Systems

1. Digestive System: Includes the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and liver. This system transforms food into energy and nutrients.

2. Reproductive System: Includes the uterus, ovaries, and prostate. This system governs fertility, cycles, and creative energy.

3. Circulatory System: Blood and lymph flow nourish the abdomen and remove toxins.

Importance of Physical Alignment

Proper organ positioning is essential for optimal functioning. Displaced organs can cause digestive issues, menstrual pain, or other imbalances.

Practice: Locate the diaphragm and pelvic crest on a partner or yourself. Observe how they move during deep breathing.

Module 3: Energetic Anatomy

The abdomen is home to the k’ux, the life force that sustains and transforms the body.

Energy Flow

The Mayan concept of energy includes ik’ (breath of life) and energy centers corresponding to modern chakras. The solar plexus governs personal power, while the sacral chakra governs creativity and emotional expression.

Energetic Blockages

Tension, fear, or unresolved trauma can block energy in the abdomen, leading to physical and emotional symptoms.

Exercise: Place your hands on your lower abdomen, breathe deeply, and visualize golden light filling the space. Imagine releasing any stagnant energy with each exhale.

Module 4: Detecting Imbalances

As a practitioner, developing sensitivity to physical and energetic imbalances is key.

Signs of Imbalance

Physical: Bloating, constipation, menstrual pain, or low back discomfort.

Emotional: Anxiety, fear, or grief stored in the abdomen.

Listening to the Body

Each area of the abdomen corresponds to different systems and emotions. For example:

The upper abdomen reflects digestion and personal power.

The lower abdomen reflects creativity and emotional stability.

Activity: Practice palpation on yourself or a partner. Note differences in texture, temperature, and tension across the abdomen.

Module 5: Traditional Mayan Bodywork Techniques

These techniques form the foundation of MAB.

Circular and Spiral Strokes

Use gentle, clockwise and Counterclockwise spiral circular motions to align with the natural flow of the digestive system.

Pressure Points

Identify and gently press key points to release tension, such as near the navel and pelvic crest.

Repositioning Techniques

Support the gentle repositioning of the uterus or other organs to restore balance.

Practice: Perform a 5-minute circular massage on yourself, focusing on maintaining a consistent rhythm.

Module 6: Tools and Rituals

Sacred tools amplify the healing process.

Herbs and Oils

Rosemary and Rue: For energetic cleansing.

Cacao: To open the heart.

Infused Oils: Use olive oil with herbal infusions for anointing.

Sacred Objects

Obsidian and selenite wands.

Copal: For smudging and clearing space.

Jade: A sacred stone for balance and connection.

Ritual Practice: Create an altar with candles, flowers, and sacred objects. Perform a blessing to set your healing intention.

Module 7: Preparing the Space

The space where healing takes place should reflect peace and reverence.

Sacred Preparation

Cleanse the space with copal or sage.

Call upon the four directions to invite balance and protection.

Activity: Design your own healing space, incorporating elements of earth, water, fire, and air.

Module 8: Healing Session Framework

A successful session flows through distinct phases:

1. Opening Ritual: Begin with a prayer or blessing.

2. Assessment: Listen to the client’s concerns and observe their posture and energy.

3. Massage: Apply techniques suited to their specific needs.

4. Closing Ritual: Ground the client and offer gratitude.

Practice: Role-play a session with a friend or peer.

Module 9: Addressing Specific Conditions

Fertility and Reproductive Health

Use gentle techniques to increase circulation in the pelvic region and realign the uterus.

Digestive Issues

Apply clockwise and counterclockwise strokes to stimulate the digestive system and relieve tension.

Case Study: A client presents with irregular menstrual cycles. Create a 3-session plan to support their healing.

Module 10: Integrating Mayan Spirituality

Aligning your practice with Mayan spirituality enhances its depth and impact.

Activity: Study the Mayan Cholq'ij calendar. Choose a day that resonates with healing and incorporate its energy into your sessions.

Module 11: Empowering Clients with Self-Care

Healing is most effective when clients are empowered to take an active role in their well-being. Self-care practices ensure that the benefits of Mayan Abdominal Massage extend into daily life.

Daily Practices for Balance

1. Self-Massage: Teach clients simple, clockwise abdominal massage they can perform at home.

2. Abdominal Breathing: Encourage diaphragmatic breathing to reduce stress and improve circulation.

3. Herbal Remedies: Suggest teas made from chamomile, mint, or ginger to support digestion and relaxation.

Personal Connection

Clients should approach these practices as a form of self-love and gratitude for their bodies.

Activity: Develop a 10-minute self-care routine to share with clients. Include massage, breathing exercises, and a reflective gratitude practice.

Module 12: Advanced Techniques for Specialized Needs

For experienced practitioners, advanced techniques address specific physical and emotional conditions.

Working with Scar Tissue

Gentle bodywork can improve circulation, reduce adhesions, and restore tissue mobility. Use light pressure, gradually increasing as the tissue softens.

Supporting Emotional Release

Some clients may experience deep emotional responses during a session. Hold space with compassion, allowing them to process without judgment.

Techniques for Pregnancy

Prenatal abdominal bodywork can alleviate discomfort and improve alignment, but it should be performed with extra care and only by experienced practitioners.

Practice: Role-play addressing a client with a specific concern, such as post-surgical scar tissue or prenatal discomfort. Focus on communication and adapting your techniques.

Module 13: Becoming a Practitioner

The final step is to fully embrace your role as a healer, honoring both the knowledge you’ve gained and the responsibilities it entails.

Maintaining Integrity

Always work with humility and respect for the sacredness of the practice.

Keep learning from elders, clients, and your own experiences.

Building a Practice

Develop a welcoming and professional space for clients.

Clearly communicate the benefits of MAB while honoring its cultural origins.
